Fort McMurray, Ab.

Greetings from Molly’s Diner up in the town of Tar Sands, sweeping parallel express lanes and the confluence of the Athabasca and the Clearwater Rivers… Fort McMurray. We had a late season project up north and so during a lunch break we were able to enjoy a really nice Reuben. I would classify it as homey. This fact was aided by our server who was the archetype of a diner waitress. So pleasant, attentive, and quick on the coffee refills. Additionally, the chef, a young feller wearing a sweet Wu-Tang Clan hat, came out and asked us how the meal was. All very down home. It was as if by driving several hours north, we’d actually found ourselves in the swamps of the southern states. Enjoying their famed hospitality … and reubens.

I should also note that if you peer past Jordan’s (right in the photo) face, there is a beautiful pooch in a framed picture. That is Molly, namesake of the diner. We didn’t get the backstory on Molly but it can be assumed she was a good girl.

Speaking of the southern states…  on the way back we listened to Molly’s Chambers by Kings of Leon. In honour of Molly and her diner. This is old King’s of Leon…  back when they were real gritty, swampy rock. You should check it out. It’s a crispy track. Anyway it felt appropriate to be finishing the lunch with some southern rock after some hospitality that would harken back to the south!
