Whitecourt, Ab.
We found this tasty number as we rolled into Whitecourt around lunchtime. KG’s Sandwich Bar was the spot, and it was a great reuben, with a fine bowl of soup and a rare Fresca to boot. One thing that stood out, about the sandwich and the restaurant generally, was there was no pretension. Come to think of it, Whitecourt kinda feels like a town without any pretension.
Ideally located for a lunch stop from Edmonton (we were on our way to Saskatoon Island Provincial Park), the greatest part about Whitecourt, aside from the sandwich I suppose, is you get the pleasure of driving on the finest highway in Alberta to get to and from there..
Highway 43…
This stretch of road is a stunner. Twinned the whole way, never too busy, crazy wide gap between the road and the treeline so that pesky animals can’t sneak up and jump into your path. Also the towns, and by extension, bathroom stops, seem well spaced. Now it may not be the flashiest, or have the prettiest views, or be the most direct, but where this highway lacks glamour, it shines in it’s effectiveness… might even say its lack of pretension.
Reuben based on a highway, or highway based on a reuben… who’s to say.
